Service Opportunities at Saint Andrew’s

Acolytes: Provide liturgical assistance during the 7:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Sunday services and at special services throughout the year. The program is open to youth in grades 5 through 12. Training is held every spring or upon request. Acolytes are expected to participate in 12 to 15 services per year. To learn more click on Serving in Worship on the Children’s Ministries page.

Walk-In Ministry of Hope: The Walk-In Ministry of Hope assists people from the community with basic needs such as food and transportation. Volunteers who work well with others and have an interest in helping those in crisis are needed to interview clients. Data-entry volunteers also are needed. The typical time commitment is 2-1/2 hours per month. Training is provided.

Sandwich Board: As one of the outreach ministries at St. Andrew’s, Sandwich Board members provide a hearty, nutritious meal for members of the community every month at Trinity Church in Aurora. Volunteers leave St. Andrew’s at 9:20 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month and return to church by 3:00 p.m. Pre-cooking is done from 9:00 to 11 a.m. each Wednesday. Anyone who enjoys people, likes serving in the kitchen, and has weekdays free is invited to participate.

Lectors and Lay Eucharistic Ministers: Lectors read the Old Testament lesson from the lectern at each worship service. By reading scripture with enthusiasm and appreciating its significance, lectors seek to bring the Word to life to worshipers. Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs) read from the Epistle, lead the Prayers of the People, and serve as chalice-bearers. LEMs also bring a Sunday worship service to residents of Burgess Square Healthcare Center. Lectors typically read once every month to six weeks. LEMs serve about one Sunday a month and are provided with training.

Parish Choir: The Parish Choir provides service music and anthems for the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Eucharist, Holy Week services, Easter Vigil and Easter Day services, Thanksgiving service, Lessons and Carols, the 10:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service, and other special services. Special performances have included the Rutter Requiem in 2012 and the Requiem by Gabriel Faure in 2012. Membership is open to parishioners who are high-school aged or older. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.

Altar Guild: The men and women of the Altar Guild prepare the sanctuary for weekly worship, as well as baptisms, weddings, funerals and other special services. Their duties include preparing the communion vessels for the Eucharist, cleaning the sanctuary and chapel, setting up for all services, caring for the altar linens, maintaining supplies of bread and wine, provisioning altar flowers, polishing the brass, and silver and filling the candle holders.

Library Guild: The Library Guild maintains the St. Andrew’s library. The group features seasonal and new reading on the book cart outside the library and purchases new selections through an annual benefit at Anderson’s Bookshop. Library Guild meets from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. New members are welcome.
