Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church Chili Cook Off

The Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church Chili Cook off brought in nearly 150 chili tasters on Sunday.   This new event was one of the most well attended in recent parish history and the fundraiser collected over $1,400 for the Saint Andrew’s Youth Group upcoming summer mission trip to Cincinnati, Ohio.

“Great work by the teenagers, terrific effort by all the church members who cooked and helped out, plus a little friendly competition equaled a rousing success for the Chili Cook Off,” said Youth Ministry Chairperson Paul Baker.

Ten delicious chili recipes were prepared by St. Andrew’s parishioners, with flavors ranging from sweet to spicy hot.  The winning chili recipe was made by Downers Grove next door neighbors and Saint Andrew’s members, Dave Howland and Bill Johnston.

The Sunday School teaching duo not only created the winning smoked beef and chorizo recipe, they also fired up the competition by having unique “Team Howlston Chili Cook Off” t-shirts made (Howlston is a combination of both men’s last names).  All Howland and Johnston family members wore the custom shirts to church that Sunday to entice members to sample their recipe, vote and donate money later in the afternoon.

“Serving chili to our fellow church members was a great time,” said Bill Johnston.  “This event is just one more example of why our family is so happy to be a part of the St. Andrew's community."

The winners were awarded a custom embroidered Saint Andrew’s Chili Cook Off apron and of course, bragging rights until next year.  Now there is talk of a rib recipe cook off to raise more money for worthy causes this summer.
